The conference, due to take place

at the Department of the Northern Peoples at the Herzen Pedagogical Institute in St. Petersburg

November 13-15 this year,

is entitled "The creative potential of the Northern peoples in the 21st century".

According to the text (apologies for my doubly non-native translation), everybody interested in the Northern indigenous peoples is welcome, particularly those who have concrete knowledge and ideas concerning the problems of the Northern peoples. The main themes will be
- the cultural potential of the Northern peoples in multiethnic and multicultural circumstances
- the future of the Northern peoples: regional and all-Russian politics
- the role of the traditional organisations in maintaining national traditions
- problems of development and ecology, right to the earth and traditional forms of living
- who are we -- research objects or people living their own lives?
- the languages of the Northern peoples in the context of Russian cultural politics
- problems of child and adult education, maintaining the national culture, museums, cultural centres and tourism
- the ecological foundation of the traditional culture
- the traditional art of the Northern peoples
- the role of researchers and educators in developing the culture of the Northern peoples
- the role of the Northern Peoples' Institute in St. Petersburg
