Alexander Ivanov
was born in the village of Semur in Mari El. He has studied painting
at the Joshkar-Ola art school (Mari El), ceramics and fine glass art
at the Moscow Academy of Applied Art. During the years of his study
he took an active interest in Mari and Finno-Ugric mythology, semantics
and archaeology. On the basis of his research in these areas he produced
the series “The Rivers of the Universe” (paintings, watercolours, ceramics)
and “ World Tree”. In 1990, he won the competition for the emblem of
the Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples. The works of Alexander
Ivanov have been exhibited at various group exhibitions and international
exhibitions of Finno-Ugric artists in Joshkar-Ola, Shupashkar (Chuvashia)
and elsewhere; personal exhibitions in Joshkar-Ola and Syktyvkar. He
was one of the leaders of the Finno-Ugric artists’ camp project in Piirissaar
in the summer 1998. His works include paintings, watercolours, ceramics,
and monumental art. Alexander Ivanov lives and works in Joshkar-Ola,
the capital of the Republic of Mari El.
